Considering a Career in Care - What does a Residential Support Worker do?
You may have already considered a career in care before but haven't known how or where to start. Joining Eagle House Group as a Residential Support Worker will be your first step towards a rewarding and fulfilling career in social care.
Qualifications or even previous experience are not essential – the right attitude, a caring approach with a willingness to learn and make a difference are all you need! You will receive all the training and support necessary to make sure that you can soon be of real value to your students in their day-to-day lives, helping them with the things which most of us tend to take for granted. This will include living skills activities (depending on your students' ages) such as tidying up, shopping, cooking, laundry and washing.
By using the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children/adults) approach we encourage our students to become independent in self-help skills so part of your role will be to ensure that you support them through this process. Some students may just require minimal support (i.e. physical prompts) whilst others may require a higher level of assistance (i.e. getting washed and dressed).
You will play an integral part in the delivery of the Waking Day Curriculum (this aims to develop and maintain a consistent approach to learning across both school and residential settings). Leisure activities, both individual and group oriented, also need support. These might include pursuing a hobby, eating in a café or restaurant, playing board and sporting games, walking, shopping, swimming, visiting community facilities and places of interest (e.g. parks, museums) going to the cinema and relaxation activities.
At the same time, and as part of the job, you may begin working towards a National Vocational Qualification in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People Level 3) which is recognised and respected throughout the Care world. Other useful and essential training in Autism, Communication, Child Protection, First Aid and Health and Safety issues will also be offered.
